Hospital—But When I Secretly Took Her, the Doctor Found Something He Had Been Hiding

The surgical team suspected a large ovarian mass that might be twisting the ovary. They could not determine its exact nature from imaging alone.

They would try to preserve as much healthy ovarian tissue as possible.

I listened carefully.

“Could she lose her ovary?”

“It’s a possibility, but our goal is to preserve it if we safely can. We’ll know more during the procedure.”

Sadie looked terrified.

I sat beside her.

“You’re not going through this alone.”

She nodded.

“Will you be there when I wake up?”

“I’ll be right outside.”

She took a breath.

“Can you call Austin?”

Austin was Sadie’s cousin and her closest friend at school. She wanted him to know why she would be absent.

I called my sister and asked her to contact him.

Then I returned to Sadie’s bedside.

A nurse brought in the consent forms.

I signed them.

When the surgical team came to take her, Sadie reached for my hand.
