My wife said my brother with Down syndrome was « too unpredictable » to be near our baby.

And Claire.

Of course, Claire.

“Why?”

“Because we need to establish who installed the camera and why.”

When I ended the call, I stood motionless.

Then I heard footsteps.

Claire appeared in the doorway.

Her hair was wet.

Her face was pale.

And her eyes went straight to the teddy bear in my hands.

“What are you doing with that?”

I turned slowly.

“Where did this come from?”

She stared.

“What?”

“The bear, Claire.”

“I bought it. You know that.”

“Where?”

“Why does it matter?”

I held it up.

“Because there’s a camera hidden inside.”

For one extraordinary second, she looked as though the floor had disappeared beneath her.

Then she forced a laugh.

“A camera?”

“Yes.”

She stepped forward.

“Give it to me.”

I pulled it away.

“Why?”

“Because you’re being ridiculous.”

“Claire, there is an electronic device sewn into this bear.”

She stopped smiling.
