Then she whispered, “You shouldn’t have opened it.”
My heart hammered.
“What did you say?”
She looked toward Jamie.
And suddenly her voice rose.
“THIS IS ALL HIS FAULT!”
Jamie flinched.
“He keeps interfering! He keeps touching things! He nearly killed Sophie, and now he’s making you suspicious of me!”
I stepped between them.
“Stop.”
Claire stared.
“Excuse me?”
“Stop blaming Jamie for everything.”
Her mouth fell open.
Then her expression changed.
It became cold.
Almost unfamiliar.
“You have no idea what you’re doing, Daniel.”
“Then explain it.”
She looked at the bear.
Then at me.
And said five words I couldn’t understand.
“That camera wasn’t for Sophie.”
## THE TRUTH MY MOTHER NEVER TOLD ME
Claire refused to explain.
She walked out of the nursery and locked herself in our bedroom.
I called her name twice.
She didn’t answer.
I wanted to break down the door.
