I didn’t remove the memory card.
I didn’t try to play anything.
I was afraid of changing or losing whatever might be stored inside.
Instead, I called Allison, the hospital social worker, using the number she had given me.
I explained what we had found.
Her voice became serious.
“Daniel, don’t alter the device. Keep it secure, and document where you discovered it.”
“Do you think it recorded what happened?”
“I can’t tell you that.”
“Should I tell Claire?”
There was a pause.
“I would recommend you speak with the investigators handling the incident before confronting anyone.”
I looked at Jamie.
He was standing beside the crib, gently touching Sophie’s blanket.
I swallowed.
“Okay.”
Then Allison asked a question that made my stomach drop.
“Daniel, has anyone else had access to your daughter’s nursery?”
I thought about our cleaning lady.
My mother-in-law.
The occasional babysitter.
