My wife said my brother with Down syndrome was « too unpredictable » to be near our baby.

My hands began to shake.

I pressed it.

Nothing happened.

Then I felt a small compartment beneath the fabric.

Inside was a tiny electronic module.

A memory card.

And a wire leading toward one of the bear’s eyes.

I stared.

Someone had hidden a camera inside my daughter’s favorite stuffed animal.

A camera I had never known existed.

A camera that might have recorded everything that happened the night Sophie was injured.

Behind me, Jamie whispered, “See?”

I could barely speak.

“Who put this here?”

Jamie looked toward the ceiling.

“Claire.”

I closed my eyes.

And suddenly remembered something.

Three weeks earlier, Claire had insisted that I stop checking the regular baby monitor on my phone.

She claimed it was making me anxious.

She said she would handle nighttime checks herself.

I had trusted her.

Without question.

Now I was holding a secret camera in my hands.

I took photographs of the device exactly as I found it and placed the bear on a clean surface.
