My wife said my brother with Down syndrome was « too unpredictable » to be near our baby.

The room looked exactly as it had before.

Soft pink curtains.

A white crib.

Moon-shaped decorations above the changing table.

And a large brown teddy bear sitting on the bookshelf.

A gift Claire had brought home three months earlier.

I remembered her saying it was from a boutique.

I remembered thinking it was expensive for a stuffed animal.

Jamie pointed.

“That one.”

I approached the shelf.

The bear looked ordinary.

Soft fur.

A blue ribbon.

Two glossy black eyes.

I picked it up.

It felt heavier than I expected.

“Jamie, how do you know there’s a camera inside?”

He stepped closer.

“Because the eye shines.”

I looked at the bear.

“One of the eyes?”

He nodded.

“At night. A tiny red light.”

A cold wave passed through me.

I turned the bear over.

There was stitching along the back, slightly uneven.

And near the bottom, a nearly invisible plastic switch.
