We had also been told to cooperate with follow-up inquiries into the incident.
Claire was unusually quiet during the drive.
Jamie sat in the back beside Sophie’s car seat.
Every time she stirred, he leaned forward slightly.
“Hi, Sophie,” he whispered.
She blinked.
Then, for the first time since the accident, she smiled at him.
Just a tiny smile.
But Jamie’s whole face lit up.
“Daniel,” he whispered excitedly. “She knows me.”
I looked at them through the rearview mirror.
And my eyes filled with tears.
“Yes,” I said.
“She knows you.”
Claire said nothing.
When we reached home, I carried Sophie inside.
Jamie followed with her hospital bag.
Claire immediately went upstairs.
“I need a shower,” she announced.
I waited until I heard the bathroom door close.
Then I turned toward Jamie.
“Show me.”
He didn’t ask what I meant.
We went straight to Sophie’s nursery.
