My wife said my brother with Down syndrome was « too unpredictable » to be near our baby.

He tapped his fingertip against his palm.

“Sometimes the back comes off.”

I felt my pulse quicken.

“Jamie, are you saying that object came from a camera?”

“I think so.”

Allison leaned forward.

“Do you know where a camera like that might be?”

Jamie pointed toward me.

“Daniel’s house.”

My stomach twisted.

“We don’t have a camera in Sophie’s room.”

Jamie shook his head.

“Yes, you do.”

I blinked.

“No, Jamie. We have a baby monitor.”

He looked frustrated.

“Not that one.”

Then he said something so strange I thought I had misunderstood.

“The one Claire hides in the teddy bear.”

## THE TEDDY BEAR WITH GLASS EYES

When the hospital allowed us to go home the following afternoon, I was terrified.

Not of Jamie.

Not anymore.

I was terrified of what I might find.

Sophie was improving, but the doctors wanted us to watch her closely and return immediately if her condition changed.
