Claire leaned forward.
“Are you seriously taking his word over mine?”
I felt Jamie shrink beside me.
Six years of marriage sat on one side of that question.
Twenty-nine years of being Jamie’s brother sat on the other.
For once, I didn’t choose the easier answer.
“I’m saying we should listen to him.”
Claire stood.
“Unbelievable.”
She walked out.
Allison waited until the door closed.
Then she turned toward me.
“Daniel, is there anything else you think I should know?”
I hesitated.
My mind returned to the little black object.
“Can we find out what that thing actually is?”
She nodded.
“We can ask whether it has been identified. The medical team has documented it.”
But Jamie suddenly reached for my sleeve.
“Daniel.”
“What?”
“It’s from a camera.”
I stared.
“What camera?”
Jamie looked surprised that I didn’t understand.
“The little kind. At work, we use cameras near the greenhouse.”
