My wife said my brother with Down syndrome was « too unpredictable » to be near our baby.

Claire immediately became defensive.

“We’ve already explained it.”

Allison sat across from us.

“I understand. I still need to speak with everyone who was present.”

Claire looked at Jamie.

“Even him?”

“Especially someone who witnessed the event.”

Jamie sat upright.

Allison smiled.

“Would you be comfortable telling me what happened in your own words?”

He nodded.

And he told her.

Everything.

The coughing.

The scream.

The object.

The fall.

Then he mentioned seeing Claire near the crib.

I watched my wife’s face.

At first, she looked annoyed.

Then her lips tightened.

Then she laughed.

“Oh, for heaven’s sake.”

Allison turned toward her.

“Is something inaccurate?”

“Jamie gets confused.”

Jamie frowned.

“No, I don’t.”

Claire sighed.

“He mixes things up. Daniel knows that.”

I looked at her.

“No,” I said quietly. “Jamie remembers things very well.”

Her eyes widened.

“What?”

“Especially things that happen at home. He remembers details.”
