My wife said my brother with Down syndrome was « too unpredictable » to be near our baby.

She was funny.

Confident.

Beautiful.

She brought homemade cookies to my office and remembered my favorite music.

She cried at our wedding.

She held my hand when my mother died.

And when Sophie was born, she looked at our daughter with such wonder that I thought I was watching love take its purest form.

How could that woman deliberately place something dangerous near our baby?

It made no sense.

So I searched for an innocent explanation.

Perhaps Jamie had misunderstood.

Perhaps Claire had placed a harmless object in the nursery.

Perhaps what he had seen had nothing to do with the choking episode.

But one question refused to leave me.

Why had Claire been so desperate to stop anyone from examining what happened?

That afternoon, a hospital social worker named Allison introduced herself.

She explained that because Sophie’s injury involved an unexplained event and a possible choking hazard, the hospital needed a thorough account.
