His face had changed.
But his eyes were the same.
I smiled through tears.
“Hi, Ned.”
He stared at me.
Then whispered:
“Are you really my mom?”
My heart broke.
I nodded.
“Yes, sweetheart.”
He looked down.
Then asked:
“Why didn’t you come?”
I felt as though someone had struck me.
I took a breath.
“Because I didn’t know where you were.”
His eyes filled with tears.
I continued.
“But I never stopped looking.”
He stared at me.
Then slowly reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a small stone.
Smooth.
Gray.
With a white stripe.
He held it toward me.
“Do you remember this?”
I covered my mouth.
It was one of the stones he’d collected on our last family vacation.
I’d told him it looked like a tiny mountain.
I nodded through tears.
“Yes.”
His lips trembled.
“You said it was special.”
I began crying.
He stepped closer.
