MY HUSBAND AND OUR THREE SONS VANISHED DURING THEIR ANNUAL FISHING TRIP—SIX YEARS LATER, MY DAUGHTER FOUND HIS OLD PHONE AND DISCOVERED WHY HIS BROTHER HAD BEEN BEGGING ME TO STOP SEARCHING

For six years, I believed my husband and our three sons had drowned in a boating accident.

Then my daughter found a phone.

A battered black smartphone hidden inside an old fishing tackle box.

Its screen was cracked.

Its battery was swollen.

And it hadn’t been switched on since the weekend my family disappeared.

But when my daughter managed to recover its contents, she discovered something that made her run upstairs screaming.

“Mom!”

I was folding laundry when she burst into my bedroom.

Her face was white.

Tears streamed down her cheeks.

She held the phone against her chest as though it might explode.

“Mom, I know what happened.”

I stared at her.

“What?”

She shook her head.
