“Dad didn’t drown.”
My knees weakened.
“What are you saying?”
She swallowed.
Then whispered:
“MOM, DAD WAS ALIVE THREE DAYS AFTER THE POLICE FOUND HIS BOAT.”
I grabbed the edge of the dresser.
For six years, I’d imagined my husband sinking beneath the dark water.
For six years, I’d dreamed of my sons calling for help.
For six years, I’d visited four empty graves.
And now my daughter was telling me that the man I’d buried in my heart had been alive after the accident.
I stared at the phone.
Then asked the question that would change our lives forever.
“Where was he?”
My daughter began sobbing.
She turned the screen toward me.
And showed me a video.
My husband, Roscoe, was sitting inside a dimly lit room.
His face was bruised.
His hands were trembling.
And behind him, I could hear a child crying.
Then Roscoe looked directly into the camera.
