I LET A HOMELESS BOY SLEEP IN THE BACK ROOM OF A GAS STATION FOR TWO WINTERS. MY MANAGER FIRED ME AND CALLED ME A THIEF IN FRONT OF EVERYONE. SIX YEARS LATER, ON THE MORNING I WAS BEING EVICTED, THAT SAME BOY RETURNED—WEARING A FIRE DEPARTMENT UNIFORM AND CARRYING SOMETHING THAT CHANGED MY LIFE FOREVER.

Doug was furious.

He argued that Danny had no right to interfere.

But Danny didn’t raise his voice.

He simply stood beside me.

When Doug finally walked toward his vehicle, he turned back.

“This isn’t over.”

Danny nodded.

“Then we’ll handle it properly.”

Doug drove away.

The deputy stayed long enough to explain what would happen next and provide information about the housing review.

When he left, I looked at the boxes scattered across the lawn.

I had been so certain that morning would end with me losing everything.

Instead, I was standing beside a man who had once slept on the floor of a gas station storeroom.

And he had brought my granddaughter.

Danny arranged for us to stay in a small furnished apartment while the housing dispute was resolved.

It wasn’t luxurious, but it was clean, warm, and close to the fire station.

Lily chose a bedroom with yellow curtains.
