I LET A HOMELESS BOY SLEEP IN THE BACK ROOM OF A GAS STATION FOR TWO WINTERS. MY MANAGER FIRED ME AND CALLED ME A THIEF IN FRONT OF EVERYONE. SIX YEARS LATER, ON THE MORNING I WAS BEING EVICTED, THAT SAME BOY RETURNED—WEARING A FIRE DEPARTMENT UNIFORM AND CARRYING SOMETHING THAT CHANGED MY LIFE FOREVER.

For the first time that morning, Doug looked uncertain.

I turned toward Danny.

“What did you bring?”

He smiled faintly.

“Help.”

He explained that after receiving the news about Jesse, he had spent years trying to find me.

When he finally learned where I lived, he discovered that Doug owned the duplex and had started eviction proceedings.

Danny contacted a housing attorney through a community assistance organization.

They reviewed the paperwork and identified several issues that needed to be investigated.

Danny had also arranged for emergency housing assistance.

“I couldn’t let you end up on the street,” he said.

I shook my head.

“Danny, you don’t owe me anything.”

He looked at me.

“You gave me somewhere to sleep when nobody else would.”

“That was years ago.”

“I know. And I have never forgotten it.”

The deputy eventually informed Doug that the eviction would be temporarily delayed while the paperwork was reviewed.
