I LET A HOMELESS BOY SLEEP IN THE BACK ROOM OF A GAS STATION FOR TWO WINTERS. MY MANAGER FIRED ME AND CALLED ME A THIEF IN FRONT OF EVERYONE. SIX YEARS LATER, ON THE MORNING I WAS BEING EVICTED, THAT SAME BOY RETURNED—WEARING A FIRE DEPARTMENT UNIFORM AND CARRYING SOMETHING THAT CHANGED MY LIFE FOREVER.

“I need to speak with the property owner.”

Doug stepped forward.

“What is there to discuss? The eviction order is valid.”

The deputy looked at him.

“Mr. Pruitt, these documents indicate a dispute regarding the ownership and condition of this property. There’s also a complaint involving the notice process. I’m going to need to verify the paperwork before we proceed.”

Doug’s face reddened.

“That’s ridiculous.”

Danny stood.

“It’s not ridiculous. My attorney has already contacted the county housing office. There are records showing that Mr. Pruitt accepted payments after claiming the tenancy had ended, and the dates on the eviction documents don’t match the notices he gave Mrs. K.”

Doug glared at him.

“You think you can walk in here and tell me how to run my properties?”

“No,” Danny replied calmly. “I think you should follow the law.”

The deputy asked Doug to step aside while he made a call.
