I LET A HOMELESS BOY SLEEP IN THE BACK ROOM OF A GAS STATION FOR TWO WINTERS. MY MANAGER FIRED ME AND CALLED ME A THIEF IN FRONT OF EVERYONE. SIX YEARS LATER, ON THE MORNING I WAS BEING EVICTED, THAT SAME BOY RETURNED—WEARING A FIRE DEPARTMENT UNIFORM AND CARRYING SOMETHING THAT CHANGED MY LIFE FOREVER.

By then, Jesse’s condition had deteriorated.

Danny returned to the hospital.

Jesse died two days later.

I couldn’t breathe.

My son had died three years earlier.

I had been living only a few miles from people who knew him.

And I had never known.

Danny reached into his pocket.

“He left something for you.”

He handed me a small envelope.

Inside was a photograph of Jesse holding a newborn baby.

Lily.

On the back, he had written:

Mom, this is your granddaughter. I hope one day I can bring her home.

I began sobbing.

Danny wrapped his arms around me.

For the first time in eleven years, I felt close to my son again.

Not because he was standing beside me.

But because I finally had something of his life that I had never known.

The sheriff’s deputy approached us.

“Ma’am?”

I looked up.

He held the document folder Danny had given him.
