I LET A HOMELESS BOY SLEEP IN THE BACK ROOM OF A GAS STATION FOR TWO WINTERS. MY MANAGER FIRED ME AND CALLED ME A THIEF IN FRONT OF EVERYONE. SIX YEARS LATER, ON THE MORNING I WAS BEING EVICTED, THAT SAME BOY RETURNED—WEARING A FIRE DEPARTMENT UNIFORM AND CARRYING SOMETHING THAT CHANGED MY LIFE FOREVER.

He survived the initial collision but suffered serious internal injuries.

He was transported to a regional hospital.

Danny received the call because Jesse had listed him as an emergency contact.

By the time Danny arrived, Jesse was conscious but weak.

“He asked me to bring Lily to see him,” Danny said. “Then he asked me to find you.”

I clutched the letters.

“Why didn’t anyone call me?”

Danny’s face twisted with regret.

“Jesse didn’t have your current number. He gave me the address he remembered, but the hospital was already trying to locate relatives. I searched online, contacted people who might know you, and eventually found your old neighborhood.”

“Why didn’t you come then?”

“I did.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

“I came to your old house. But you’d moved.”

He explained that he had asked around, contacted a few former neighbors, and eventually learned I had been living in the duplex.
