I LET A HOMELESS BOY SLEEP IN THE BACK ROOM OF A GAS STATION FOR TWO WINTERS. MY MANAGER FIRED ME AND CALLED ME A THIEF IN FRONT OF EVERYONE. SIX YEARS LATER, ON THE MORNING I WAS BEING EVICTED, THAT SAME BOY RETURNED—WEARING A FIRE DEPARTMENT UNIFORM AND CARRYING SOMETHING THAT CHANGED MY LIFE FOREVER.

I still remember the pancakes.

I love you.

Jesse.

I pressed the letter against my mouth.

The next letter was written a year later.

Then another.

Then another.

Some had been returned.

Others had been delivered to an address that was no longer mine.

Danny explained that Jesse had eventually lost the correct address and phone number.

He had been ashamed to ask other relatives for help because he feared they would tell me where he was before he was ready.

Then Lily was born.

Jesse became determined to build a stable life before coming home.

“He wanted to bring you something,” Danny said.

“What?”

“A granddaughter.”

I looked at Lily.

Tears blurred my vision.

“He wanted you to meet her.”

Danny nodded.

“He talked about it all the time.”

The hospital accident happened three years earlier.

Jesse had been driving home after a late shift when another vehicle crossed into his lane.
