Nearly ten years after graduation, we heard that Evan’s old high school class was planning a reunion.
At first, I thought it might be good for him.
A chance to see how much life had changed.
A chance to walk back into a room that had once made him feel invisible and realize he no longer needed anything from it
Then we found out something that hurt more than I expected.
Everyone from the graduating class had been invited.
Everyone except Evan.
I stared at the list twice, hoping there had been some mistake.
There were names I barely remembered.
People who had transferred in during senior year.
Students who had hardly attended school events.
But not my son.
When I told him, I was more upset than he was.
“I’m sorry,” I said. “That’s incredibly unfair.”
Evan looked at me.
Then smiled.
“I think I’ll go anyway.”
