I LET A HOMELESS BOY SLEEP IN THE BACK ROOM OF A GAS STATION FOR TWO WINTERS. MY MANAGER FIRED ME AND CALLED ME A THIEF IN FRONT OF EVERYONE. SIX YEARS LATER, ON THE MORNING I WAS BEING EVICTED, THAT SAME BOY RETURNED—WEARING A FIRE DEPARTMENT UNIFORM AND CARRYING SOMETHING THAT CHANGED MY LIFE FOREVER.

He didn’t know whether Jesse wanted me to know where he was. He didn’t know what had happened between us. And he was terrified I might call the police or force him to leave.

So he said nothing.

Then I gave him the hot dog and cocoa.

And when I offered him a place to sleep, he accepted.

“I knew Jesse would have wanted me to be safe,” Danny said.

I reached for his hand.

“You were a child, too.”

He nodded.

“I know that now.”

When Doug fired me, Danny panicked.

He believed he had caused me to lose my job.

He also knew that if he stayed in town, Doug might report him for trespassing or theft.

So he left.

But before leaving, he placed the photograph in the coat pocket and promised himself he would return someday.

He traveled south with a group of other young people and eventually found a youth shelter.
