I LET A HOMELESS BOY SLEEP IN THE BACK ROOM OF A GAS STATION FOR TWO WINTERS. MY MANAGER FIRED ME AND CALLED ME A THIEF IN FRONT OF EVERYONE. SIX YEARS LATER, ON THE MORNING I WAS BEING EVICTED, THAT SAME BOY RETURNED—WEARING A FIRE DEPARTMENT UNIFORM AND CARRYING SOMETHING THAT CHANGED MY LIFE FOREVER.

There, a counselor helped him obtain identification, enroll in school, and apply for assistance.

He finished high school through an alternative education program.

Then he joined a volunteer fire department.

“I liked that I could help people,” he explained. “I knew what it felt like to be cold, scared, and alone. I wanted to become someone who could show up when people needed help.”

He worked hard, completed his training, and eventually earned a position with the Duluth Fire Department.

He had also kept searching for Jesse.

For years, he had no reliable contact.

Then, one winter, he received a call from a hospital in another state.

Jesse had been admitted after a serious accident.

Danny traveled to see him.

And that was when he learned about Lily.

“Where was Jesse?” I whispered.

Danny looked toward the street.

“He was living in Wisconsin.”

I stared at him.

“Wisconsin?”

“He’d been working at a repair shop. He met Lily’s mother there. They were together for a while, and Lily was born.”
