I LET A HOMELESS BOY SLEEP IN THE BACK ROOM OF A GAS STATION FOR TWO WINTERS. MY MANAGER FIRED ME AND CALLED ME A THIEF IN FRONT OF EVERYONE. SIX YEARS LATER, ON THE MORNING I WAS BEING EVICTED, THAT SAME BOY RETURNED—WEARING A FIRE DEPARTMENT UNIFORM AND CARRYING SOMETHING THAT CHANGED MY LIFE FOREVER.

I had never imagined he was too ashamed to return.

One night, Jesse told Danny that he wanted to find work somewhere far away.

He had heard about seasonal jobs in another state.

He thought he could save enough money to return home someday.

Danny begged him not to go.

But Jesse believed leaving was the only way to build a life that wouldn’t disappoint everyone.

They separated.

Danny eventually found himself back in Duluth, where he started visiting the Gas-N-Go because it stayed warm at night.

He didn’t know that the woman working behind the counter was Jesse’s mother.

Not at first.

Then, one night, he noticed a framed photograph behind the register.

It showed Jesse as a little boy.

Danny recognized him immediately.

He asked who the child was.

I told him it was my son.

Danny said he almost told me everything that night.

But he was afraid.
