“What debt?” Richard’s mother whispered.
I opened the messages Michael had forwarded.
“Richard suggested deducting most of Nolan’s wages for rent, food, and what he called his upbringing expenses.”

Vivian whispered, “Repayment?”
“Richard wrote, ‘He knows he owes us. He won’t argue.’”
His mother stared at him. “You expected that child to repay you for raising him?”
