“Freedom?”
I put down my fork. “Richard, why don’t you tell everyone about the condition you gave Nolan when he was twelve?”
I’d like to say something about Nolan.
His smile vanished. “Emma, this isn’t necessary.”
“Then it shouldn’t be difficult to explain.”
“What condition?” Vivian asked.
I looked around the table. “Richard told Nolan that once he turned eighteen, he’d have to leave our house.”
His mother gasped. “Richard!”
Now he’s ready to begin an independent life.
“It was about responsibility!”
“He was twelve,” I said.
Richard raised his voice. “It’s not like I’m throwing him onto the street. I’ve already arranged his future.”
“Without asking me?”
“Ask Michael. He agreed to everything.”
He’d have to leave our house.
Everyone turned toward his brother.
Michael slowly stood. “Richard did offer Nolan a full-time job at my shop, with a room upstairs.”
