Some looked surprised.
Others looked uncomfortable.
A few whispered.
One former classmate finally approached.
“Evan?”
“Yes.”
“Wow.”
Evan smiled politely.
“It’s been a while.”
The man shifted awkwardly.
“I heard you weren’t on the invitation list.”
“So did I.”
“That must’ve been an oversight.”
Evan could have embarrassed him.
Could have asked how someone accidentally overlooked one graduate while inviting nearly everyone else.
Instead, he simply said:
“Probably.”
Then changed the subject.
That was it.
Later in the evening, the reunion committee invited several alumni to come forward and give brief updates about their lives.
Marriage.
Children.
Careers.
Moves.
Accomplishments.
When Evan’s name was called, people became noticeably attentive.
By then, many already knew about his company.
They probably expected him to talk about growth.
Revenue.
Success.
Maybe some polished story about entrepreneurship.
Evan walked to the microphone.
Looked around the room.
Then said:
“I didn’t come here because I needed an apology.”
