Marcus didn’t answer. He simply opened his laptop, turned it toward her, and pressed play on the video recording from two weeks ago.

The high-definition video showed Sarah standing right next to Julian in Marcus’s private study, discussing how to poison Lily and steal the $4 million estate.

Sarah’s face drained of every ounce of color. The magazine slipped from her fingers, fluttering to the rug.

“Marcus… I… that’s not what it looks like,” she stammered, scrambling off the sofa, her voice rising in sheer panic. “He forced me! He was blackmailing me about—”

“Save it, Sarah,” Marcus said, his voice flat, emotionless, and absolute. “Dr. Julian Vance was arrested twenty minutes ago at his private practice in White Plains. Federal agents seized his computer, his medical logs, and the synthetic drops he brought into this house.”

Sarah took two steps back toward the hallway, her eyes darting frantically toward the front door. “You… you can’t prove I gave her anything—”

“The pediatric blood panel Evelyn had done on Lily two hours ago says otherwise,” Marcus interrupted, stepping between Sarah and the exit. “The disinhibitor is sitting right there in her tox screening. The local police, the state prosecutor, and Child Protective Services have already signed off on the warrants.”

The heavy double doors of the front entrance suddenly burst open.

Four Connecticut State Troopers, flanked by two plainclothes federal investigators, stepped into the foyer.

“Sarah Mercer,” the lead investigator announced, unholstering a pair of steel handcuffs. “You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, child endangerment, administration of a controlled substance, and corporate grand larceny.”

Sarah shrank back against the wall, hyperventilating, as the officers grabbed her wrists and pinned them behind her back. The sleek, elegant stepmother had completely vanished, replaced by a terrified criminal staring down the barrel of twenty years in a federal penitentiary.

As they marched her out the front door into the bright afternoon sun, she looked back at Marcus, her eyes pleading. “Marcus, please! I was foolish! We can fix this!”

Marcus stood on the porch, watching the police cruiser’s lights flash red and blue across the manicured green lawn of his Greenwich home.

“It’s already fixed,” Marcus said quietly.

Six months later.

The summer sun shone brightly over the coastal cliffs of Watch Hill, Rhode Island. The ocean breeze carried the salty scent of the Atlantic across the wide wooden deck of Hannah’s beach house.

Inside the kitchen, the counters were covered in fresh fruit, paints, and drawing paper.

Lily sat at the large oak table, laughing happily as she painted a giant watercolor sun. Her cheeks were bright, her eyes clear and full of life, completely free of the shadows that had once threatened to consume her.

Evelyn sat beside her, sipping tea, smiling warmly as she watched her granddaughter work.

Marcus walked out onto the deck, holding two cups of coffee. He looked out over the crashing waves, listening to the pure, unburdened sound of his daughter’s laughter echoing from inside the house.

The legal nightmare was officially over. Sarah and Julian had both accepted plea bargains to avoid full public trials, receiving fifteen and eighteen years in federal prison respectively without the possibility of early parole. The holding trusts were secured, the Greenwich home was listed for sale, and Marcus had taken an extended sabbatical from his firm to focus entirely on what mattered most.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, framed photograph of Hannah, resting it on the wooden railing beside him.

Lily ran out onto the deck, holding up her painting, her feet bare against the warm cedar planks.

“Daddy, look!” she cheered, holding up the bright yellow sun. “It’s for the living room wall!”

Marcus knelt down, pulling her into a warm, tight embrace, holding her close against his chest as the ocean wind blew around them.

“It’s perfect, sweetheart,” Marcus whispered, kissing her cheek. “It’s absolutely perfect.”
