The Truth Behind the Juice
The sound of footsteps on the kitchen hardwood broke Marcus’s trance.

Sarah appeared in the hallway arch, her beige cashmere sweater draped loosely over her shoulders, holding a small glass filled with apple juice. Her smile was soft, warm, and entirely convincing—the same serene expression that had comforted him at his lowest moments over the past two years.

“Everything alright, sweetheart?” Sarah asked, her voice dropping into a gentle cadence. “The taxi’s going to be here in ten minutes. Lily, honey, come drink your juice before Daddy has to go.”

Lily’s arms tightened around Marcus’s neck. He could feel her heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.

Marcus stood up slowly, smoothing the front of his jacket. Years of navigating high-stakes financial risk audits had taught him one vital lesson: when an opponent thinks they hold the high ground, you never let them see your posture shift.

“Actually, Sarah,” Marcus said, keeping his tone effortlessly light, “the Chicago conference just got pushed to tomorrow morning. Board emergency in the Midwest. I’m going to reschedule the flight.”

Sarah’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second. Her fingers tightened imperceptibly around the glass. “Oh. That’s… sudden. Are you sure? You spent weeks preparing for that presentation.”

“They’re delaying the opening panel,” Marcus replied, picking up his suitcase and setting it back near the coat rack. “It gives me a full extra day at home. I’ll go upstairs to my office and clear my calendar.”

Sarah hesitated, standing frozen in the hallway as Marcus took Lily by the hand and led her upstairs. Before he reached the landing, he glanced back over his shoulder. Sarah was standing near the kitchen sink, pouring the glass of apple juice down the drain.

Inside his second-floor office, Marcus locked the door. He sat Lily down on the leather sofa, handed her a sketchbook and colored pencils, and knelt in front of her.

“Lily, listen to me very carefully,” Marcus whispered, taking her small hands in his. “You did the right thing telling me. You are safe, and I am not going anywhere. But I need you to do something for me. I’m going to ask Evelyn to take you to her house for a playdate today. Can you do that for me?”
