The House Beside the Water

At the bottom was the name of a former clinic administrator.

I set the letter down.

For a moment, I could not speak.

Alexander had gone very still.

Daniel was the first to break the silence.

“Do you want me to contact the administrator?”

“Yes,” I whispered. “If she’s still alive.”

“I can try.”

I turned toward Alexander.

“Your father paid for my mother’s treatment.”

“It seems so.”

“Did you know?”

“No.”

“You told me he supported the clinic.”

“I did know that.”

“But you didn’t know he helped her.”

“Not until now.”

He looked at the letter, then away from it.

“I’m sorry, Claire.”

“Don’t apologize for something you didn’t know.”

“I’m sorry it was kept from you.”

That, I understood.

It was not the same as regret for his own choices, but it was a kind of sorrow all the same.
