The House Beside the Water

Alexander replied with a single thank-you.

The appointment was held in a small consultation room with a desk, two chairs, and a shelf of pamphlets about newborn care.

Alexander sat across from me, while Daniel took the chair beside mine.

The specialist explained what the scan might indicate, what tests could be done after birth, and how many babies with similar findings needed only careful follow-up.

I asked questions until my notes filled two pages.

Alexander listened closely, his hands folded and his attention fixed on the doctor.

He did not interrupt when I asked what would happen if the baby needed treatment.

He did not tell me not to worry.

He asked one practical question about how quickly a newborn could be assessed, then wrote down the answer.

On the ride home, Daniel drove while Alexander followed in his own car.

The appointment had gone well, but I felt tired in a way that reached into my bones.
