The House Beside the Water

“Thank you,” he said.

I nodded, unable to answer.

After he left, I stood alone in the quiet room with one hand on my stomach and the other resting on the

back of his chair.

It was possible to believe he loved the baby.

It was possible to believe he was sorry.

Neither possibility told me whether I could trust him again.

The following week, the doctor called with an update.

The scan still did not offer a clear answer, but she recommended that I meet with a pediatric specialist so

I could understand what might be needed after the birth.

I wrote down the clinic’s name and the date of the consultation.

Then I sent the information through Daniel to Alexander.

His reply came quickly.

I’ll be there if you want me there.

I did not answer immediately.

Later that evening, I wrote back that he could attend, but Daniel would also be present and the meeting would focus on the baby.
