Written on the back were five words:
ONE CHILD ENTERS. TWO LEAVE.
The house creaked.
Then a voice came from inside the box.
“Mom?”
A woman’s voice answered from somewhere upstairs.
“Yes, sweetheart?”
“Which one of us is real?”
There was a long silence.
Then the woman began to sob.
“Neither of you.”

4:17 A.M. — THE ABANDONED HOUSE
Officer Miller wasn’t supposed to return to the house.
But the black telephone had been ringing nonstop, even after he removed its battery.
Every time it rang, the same whisper came through.
“Find the basement.”
So he drove back to the abandoned property.
The front door was open.
Inside, he found a family photograph lying on the floor.
He picked it up.
His hands began to shake.
He recognized the father.
It was his own father, who had died when Miller was a child.
And standing beside him was a young woman who looked exactly like Miller’s mother.
On the back, someone had written:
THE FIRST FAMILY. 1963.
Miller heard footsteps upstairs.
He drew his gun.
“Police! Show yourself!”
A little girl appeared at the top of the stairs.
Blue dress.
Wet hair.
Bare feet.
Emily.
Miller pointed his flashlight at her.
“Where is Daniel?”
She looked at him with empty eyes.
“Which one?”
“There’s only one Daniel.”
Emily smiled sadly.
“That’s what everyone thinks.”
Then she walked downstairs.
As she passed him, she whispered:
“My brother isn’t the monster, Officer.”
Miller turned toward her.
“Then what is?”
Emily stopped.
For the first time, she looked genuinely afraid.
“The thing that keeps making us.”
A sound came from the basement.
Three knocks.
Then a man’s voice.
“Emily, it’s time to come home.”
She screamed.
The basement door slammed shut.
And the entire house began to shake.

THE LAST SECRET
Miller forced the basement door open.
Below, he found a room filled with old telephones.
