THE GIRL WHO CALLED FROM THE DEAD

THE GIRL WHO CALLED FROM THE DEAD

PART 3: THE LAST VOICE

The police found two bodies in the cemetery.

One belonged to a man who had been dead for twenty years.

The other belonged to a little girl wearing a blue dress.

But the strangest discovery was made at 6:42 a.m.

A seven-year-old boy was standing outside the cemetery gates.

He looked exactly like the dead man.

When Officer Miller approached him, the boy smiled.

“Excuse me, sir,” he said politely. “Have you seen my sister?”

The officer knelt beside him.

“What’s your name, son?”

The boy tilted his head.

“Daniel.”

Officer Miller felt a sudden chill.

“Daniel what?”

The boy’s smile disappeared.

For the first time, his eyes looked ancient.

“Just Daniel.”

Then every streetlight in the cemetery went out.

When the lights came back on, the boy was gone.

Only a small, black telephone remained on the ground.

It began to ring.

—

TWENTY YEARS AGO — THE TRUTH

Deep beneath the abandoned house, a door opened by itself.

Behind it was a room that had never appeared on the house’s blueprints.

The walls were covered in photographs.

Hundreds of them.

Every photograph showed the same family.

A father.

A mother.

A little girl named Emily.

And a little boy named Daniel.

But there was something wrong with the photographs.

In every single one, the father’s face was scratched out.

In every single one, Emily was crying.

And in every single one, Daniel was standing in the background.

Watching.

A final photograph hung above a wooden box.

It showed the family on the night Emily disappeared.

Their father was kneeling beside the box, holding a knife.

Their mother was screaming.

Emily was trying to escape.

And Daniel…

Daniel was already inside.
