The Door My Son Closed Made Me Question Everything—But the Papers in My Lawyer’s Office Revealed a Family Secret None of Us Had Faced

Patricia whispered, “What does that mean?”

“I don’t know,” I said.

But I was beginning to understand that Allison’s plan—whatever it had truly been—had not started with one desperate decision.

It had developed slowly.

Through conversations.

Access.

Documents.

Assumptions.

And perhaps through secrets she had told Geoffrey and secrets she had told us, carefully keeping everyone from comparing notes.

Martin said he was sending us Charles Vane’s written statement.

I got out of bed, dressed, and went to the kitchen.

A few minutes later, the email arrived.

The statement was four pages.

Most of it confirmed what Martin had already told us.

Then, near the end, I found a paragraph he had not mentioned.

I read it once.

Then again.

Patricia came beside me.

“What is it?”

I turned the laptop toward her.

Charles Vane had written that during his meeting with Allison, she became upset while discussing the restaurant’s debt.
