“According to him, Allison contacted him for advice on negotiating restaurant debt.”
I felt the familiar cold sensation return.
“Did he send Geoffrey those emails?”
“No.”
“Then who did?”
“That’s what we need to determine.”
Martin paused.
“And Robert?”
“Yes?”
“Charles remembers Allison clearly.”
“Why?”
“Because during their consultation, she asked him a very specific question.”
I waited.
“She asked whether creditors could reach property that had recently been transferred into a family trust.”
Neither Patricia nor I spoke.
Martin continued.
“He told her it depended on ownership, timing, and whether the transfer was legitimate.”
I looked toward our bedroom window.
Morning sunlight was coming through the blinds.
Ordinary light.
Ordinary day.
But the structure beneath our family had shifted again.
“Did he say anything else?”
“Yes.”
“What?”
“She told him the property did not belong to her or Geoffrey yet.”
Yet.
That one word stayed in the room after Martin finished speaking.
