“When?”
“About two months ago.”
“How much?”
“One hundred eighty thousand.”
Patricia and I looked at each other.
The lien filing was $186,000.
Geoffrey saw our faces.
“What?”
I told him the amount.
He sat down again.
For nearly a minute, none of us spoke.
Then Geoffrey whispered, “Oh my God.”
Patricia moved to sit beside him.
He shook his head.
“No, Mom.”
She stopped.
His eyes were red.
“I signed papers.”
My stomach dropped.
“What papers?”
“Business restructuring documents.”
“Did you read them?”
“Yes.”
“Every page?”
He didn’t answer.
“Geoffrey.”
“No.”
He pressed his fingers to his forehead.
“Allison said the attorney had already reviewed everything.”
“What attorney?”
“One from her office.”
“Name?”
“I don’t remember.”
I stared at him.
“You signed legal documents connected to a hundred-eighty-thousand-dollar investment and you don’t remember the attorney’s name?”
“I know how that sounds.”
“It sounds exactly like what it is.”
