The Door My Son Closed Made Me Question Everything—But the Papers in My Lawyer’s Office Revealed a Family Secret None of Us Had Faced

“As of this morning, yes.”

I exhaled.

That was the first relief I had felt since yesterday.

Martin continued.

“But there may be liens.”

My relief disappeared.

“What kind?”

“If Geoffrey and Allison have business debt, they may have used the property as collateral.”

“They can’t use my house as collateral.”

“They can’t legally use your house as collateral.”

There was the distinction again.

Martin’s paralegal, Denise, appeared in the doorway.

She carried three printed pages.

“I found two filings.”

Martin took them.

His eyes moved quickly.

Then he handed one to me.

The first was a preliminary deed transfer submitted six weeks earlier.

The second was a notice of intended security interest from Desert Mountain Commercial Lending.

Borrower:

Hawthorne Table Group LLC.

I stared at the name.

“The restaurant.”

Martin nodded.

“Most likely.”

The amount beside it was $186,000.

For several seconds, I couldn’t hear anything except the air conditioner.
