The boy sitting behind us spent most of the movie

PART 5 — FINAL

Marcus and I used the vouchers two weeks later, a Tuesday matinee with an almost empty auditorium, no children behind us at all, just an elderly couple a few rows up sharing a single bag of popcorn with the specific quiet contentment of people who had clearly done this exact thing together for decades.

Jordan stopped by our row before the previews started, off the clock, just to say hello, and mentioned that Ethan’s family hadn’t been back since, whether by choice or by the new escalation policy finally catching up with their account, he genuinely didn’t know and didn’t seem particularly invested in finding out.

“I hope the kid’s okay,” I said. “He seemed more scared of you than anything else that night.”

“He seemed like a kid whose parents had never once told him no in a way that stuck,” Jordan said. “That’s not really his fault. I just can’t let it become three hundred other people’s problem every weekend.”

Marcus and I started a small tradition after that, a Tuesday matinee once a month, deliberately choosing the quietest showing we could find, a habit that had less to do with Ethan’s family specifically and more to do with rediscovering how nice an ordinary evening could feel once we stopped bracing for it to go wrong.

I think about that night sometimes, not the popcorn, honestly, but the two minutes Marcus told me he’d spent standing in that lobby, deciding whether being uncomfortable for thirty seconds mattered more than one more night of me quietly absorbing something that wasn’t mine to absorb.

I think about the specific look on his face when he pulled that last piece of popcorn out of my hair, the moment something in him apparently recalculated an equation he’d been running his entire adult life without ever quite noticing the variables.

I used to think of him as the man who’d eat the wrong meal rather than send it back.

I still think that’s mostly true.
