“There’s something attached to the car,” Jake’s voice repeated over the radio,

crackling and thin. “Hold on. Let me get closer.”

On the ramp, Dale pressed the speaker to his ear.

Behind him the family waited, frozen, breathing in small shallow gasps.

Under the water,

Jake’s lantern beam shook as he reached toward the twisted frame of the Skylark.

Something was tangled in the rusted metal,

soft where everything else was hard.

He brushed the silt away with two careful fingers. It was a chain.

A thin silver chain.

And dangling from it, tarnished but unmistakable, was a tiny unicorn charm.

🦄 Jake stared at it for a long moment.

Sound seemed to vanish from the lake.

“Dale,” he said, his voice cracking. “It’s a unicorn.”

Up on the boat, Dale closed his eyes. “Say it again.”

“A little silver unicorn. On a chain. Caught in the frame.”

Dale lowered the radio.

He turned back toward the family and walked slowly up the ramp.

Every step felt heavier than the last. “Brandy,” he said.

“Brian. Trish. I need you to sit down.” “No,” Trish whispered.

“Just tell us.” “We found something with your sister’s car.

A necklace. A silver unicorn.” Trish’s hand flew to her mouth.

A sound came out of her that wasn’t quite a word.

“She wore that,” Brandy said, barely audible. “She never took it off.

Mom wore that every day.” Tears spilled down her cheeks.

“She was wearing it that night.” Nobody moved. Even the wind,

which had been whipping the lake into whitecaps all morning,

seemed to soften. 🕊️ “There’s more,” Dale said gently.

“We’ve found remains. At this point, we’re confident we’ve found her.”

For a long moment,

the only sound was the lapping of water against the concrete.

Then Brandy folded into her brother’s arms,

and thirty years of held-in grief poured out of her. Brian held her.
