Handlebars. A bicycle seat. A bicycle.
Brian, standing on the ramp, went pale. Caroline had planned to give her son a bicycle for his birthday. 🚲 That was the surprise she never got to deliver. The whole family had wondered about it for thirty years, whether she’d bought it, hidden it, or only dreamed it.
Now it sat on the deck, rust-red and twisted, as if the lake itself had been saving the answer.
“It was his birthday,” Jake murmured into the radio. “That could be a bicycle for him.”
On shore, Brian covered his mouth.
But the divers weren’t finished. Jake’s lantern swept across the crater where the car had once rested, and there, in the silt, lay something pale and curved.
“Dale,” he said slowly. “I’m in the crater. I think I’ve found something. Have Josh empty the bag and take a look.”
Josh, the topside helper, spilled the bag into a plastic tub. He sorted through it with his bare hands. A vehicle spring. A glass shard. An armrest.
And then, quietly, his voice dropped to a whisper.
“We have a jaw.” 😶
“A what?” Dale said.
“A human jaw. I’m not kidding. Human jaw.” 💀
The boat went completely silent. Even the wind seemed to hold its breath.
Dale lifted his radio, and his voice trembled for the first time that day.
“Jake… do you hear me? Don’t stop. Focus on her. Find her.” 🙏
On the ramp, the family didn’t know what was happening. They only saw the divers whispering, the investigators gathering, the sheriff’s truck pulling up beside the old blue building by the dock. They only saw Dale walking toward them with a look they could not read.
Brandy’s heart hammered. Her aunt Trish gripped the railing so tightly her knuckles went white.
Dale stopped in front of them. He took a long breath.
“I need to tell you something,” he began. “And I need you to be ready.”
Before he could say another word, a diver’s voice cracked over the radio from deep in the lake: “Dale… there’s something else down here. Something attached to the car. You’re not going to believe what I’m looking at.” 😳
What did Jake find chained to the wreckage? And what did Dale say next?
