“I believe you.”
That seemed to frighten him more than an accusation would have.
“You believe me?”
“I believe you did not read this version.”
He looked toward the courtroom doors.
Through the glass, Ruth and Frank were speaking rapidly with Calder.
Andrew watched them.
Then he looked back at me.
“Who changed it?”
“I don’t know.”
“You think my parents did?”
“I think someone expected me to sign without reading.”
His breathing grew shallow.
“Calder prepared it.”
“Perhaps.”
“You think he lied to me?”
“I think we need evidence before we decide who lied.”
A long silence passed between us.
Then Andrew said, “You really were an Army attorney?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you ever tell me?”
“Because when we met, you told me you wanted a wife who could have a normal life.”
“I didn’t mean you had to hide.”
“I didn’t hide.”
“You never talked about it.”
