“It’s only for the closest family,” my dad told me as eighty guests boarded my $1.2 million yacht for my brother’s engagement party, while he laughed and thanked me for the free venue. I didn’t argue or beg to be included. I waited until they cleared the harbor, then sent the captain six words—and minutes later, the yacht began turning back toward shore.

My name is Avery Cole, and I was twenty-eight the afternoon my father informed me that I wasn’t invited to my brother’s engagement party.

Eighty guests were already boarding my yacht.

I stood near the marina gate with my phone pressed to my ear, watching caterers carry trays down the dock toward Second Wind, the sixty-two-foot motor yacht I had purchased, insured, maintained, and paid to keep in that slip.

My father’s voice came through with the patient irritation he usually reserved for people he considered difficult.

“It’s only for the closest family, Avery.”

For a moment, I thought I had misheard him.

Beyond the gate, white tablecloths moved in the harbor breeze. A florist was fastening arrangements along the aft deck. Someone tested the sound system, sending a few bright notes of music across the water.

“My brother’s engagement party is on my boat,” I said.
