One afternoon, almost a year after my wedding day, Grace came into my office carrying a photograph.
“I think you’ll want to see this,” she said.
The picture showed a mother standing outside a small house.
Two young children were holding her hands.
All three were smiling.
I looked at Grace.
“Who are they?”
“A family we helped through one of our housing partners.”
She sat across from me.
“The mother has started a new job. The children are settled in school. And she finally has a home where she feels safe.”
I looked at the photograph again.
There was nothing extravagant about the house.
A little front porch.
A narrow driveway.
A few flowers growing beside the steps.
But the mother’s expression was unforgettable.
She looked relieved.
Peaceful.
Free.
Grace smiled softly.
“She asked us to pass along a message.”
“What did she say?”
Grace unfolded a note.
