My father had arranged for them to be taken somewhere safe and informed that I was unharmed.
But they still wanted answers.
“Derek!” Lily called.
Several guests turned.
“Where is Amelia?”
Derek’s expression changed.
He stepped away from Sienna.
“Lily, this isn’t the appropriate time.”
Grace moved beside her.
“We went to her apartment. The door was broken. There were police officers outside. And nobody would tell us what happened until her family contacted us!”
Derek’s eyes flickered toward the doors.
For the first time, I saw genuine nervousness on his face.
Then he recovered.
“Amelia left me. She didn’t want to get married. That’s all there is to it.”
Lily stared at him.
“You expect us to believe that?”
“It’s the truth.”
“No,” Grace said. “The truth is that she worked herself exhausted helping you for three years while you treated her like she was lucky to have you.”
