Older homes often contain substantial metal components that were designed to be both functional and decorative.
Finials, weights, handles, brackets, knobs, fittings, and architectural ornaments can all look mysterious when separated from the furniture or structure they originally belonged to.
A person discovering one decades later might reasonably wonder what it was meant for.
This is especially true when a house has been occupied by the same family for generations.
An object may have been removed during a renovation but kept because someone believed it might be useful someday.
Then it sits in a drawer for 30 years.
Eventually, someone discovers it and has absolutely no idea what it is.
Could They Be Vintage Curtain Weights?
This is another possibility worth considering.
Older curtains and draperies sometimes used weights to help fabric hang properly.
Depending on their design, curtain weights can be surprisingly dense.
Some may look decorative when separated from the curtains they were designed to accompany.
If the objects are small and heavy, and there are several similar pieces, curtain or drapery hardware could be worth investigating.
Again, however, appearance and measurements would be necessary before reaching a conclusion.
Maybe They’re Part of an Old Game
Some vintage games and toys contain heavy pieces.
Chess sets, board games, tabletop games, and traditional toys have historically been made from materials such as wood, metal, stone, and ceramic.
A collection of matching heavy objects could therefore be part of a game that isn’t immediately recognizable.
This is particularly likely if the objects are uniform in size and shape.
Sets tend to produce repeated pieces.
If there are several nearly identical objects, that is an important clue.
Could They Be Weights?
The simplest explanation might literally be that they’re weights.
