The man chuckled softly.
“You’ve been asking a lot of questions.”
I stared at Evelyn.
Her eyes widened.
She seemed to recognize the voice coming through the speaker.
“Where’s my wife?” I demanded.
A pause.
Then the man said, “Claire has made some unfortunate choices.”
My blood ran cold.
“What have you done to her?”
“Nothing she didn’t invite.”
I could hear movement in the background.
Then a faint sound.
A woman crying.
“Claire?”
The voice returned.
“Your wife isn’t the person you think she is.”
I gripped the phone.
“Who are you?”
There was a long silence.
Then the man laughed.
“Ask your brother.”
Jamie had gone completely still.
I turned toward him.
“Jamie?”
The man’s voice became colder.
“Ask him what he remembers about the garage.”
Then I heard another sound through the phone.
A baby’s cry.
My whole body went rigid.
