CHAPTER 5: THE CEILING BREACH
*KABOOOOM.*
The two-story, forty-foot floor-to-ceiling plate-glass atrium overlooking the ocean did not shatter from wind.
It was cleaved clean out of its reinforced steel structural mullions by a synchronized, linear thermite breaching charge deployed by eight operators from the **United States Navy Special Warfare Development Group (DEVGRU Red Squadron)**:
*CRASH-ROAR-SHATTER.*
A concussive shockwave of humid Caribbean night air, pulverized tempered safety glass, and high-pressure tactical propellant blew through the villa, blowing the twelve-foot chandelier into a thousand dangling crystal wires and throwing Mark Conway flat on his back across the marble floor:
*SCREAMS-PANTING-TERROR.*
The thirty-two private security mercenaries never raised their submachine guns.
Before their boots could shift on the balcony tiles, thirty-two synchronized, invisible infrared laser dots painted the centers of their foreheads, chests, and throats through the drifting dust:
“FEDERAL INQUEST!
CORDON ESTABLISHED!
ALL WEAPONS ON THE MARBLE!
SPREAD YOUR FINGERS FLAT ON THE TILES!
DO NOT MOVE!”
The sixteen guards on the lower floor threw their weapons into the infinity pool, diving face-down on the wet floorboards:
“WE SURRENDER!
WE’RE PRIVATE SECURITY!
DON’T SHOOT!”
*TACK.*
*TACK.*
*TACK.*
The sound of hand-welted leather field boots stepping through the shattered glass was unhurried, rhythmic, and concussive.
Walking through the billowing curtain of smoke…
Her Army Service Uniform pristine beneath her late grandfather’s twenty-ounce Scottish tweed hacking jacket, the solid-silver eagles of a **Full Colonel** gleaming on her shoulder epaulets, her chest covered in three dense rows of combat decorations…
Her unpolished bronze surveyor’s transit pin catching the tactical halogen glare…
And strapped to her left wrist, advancing with that deliberate, unhurried sixty-cycle cadence:
*tack… tack… tack…*
Was Arthur Mercer Senior’s **1956 Admiralty Gold Chronometer**.
It was me.
Colonel Iris Eleanor Mercer.
Alive.
Beside my right knee, his massive golden head held high, his amber eyes locked onto Mark Conway’s throat with silent, predatory discipline…
Was Barnaby.
Ellie vaulted from the ivory sofa:
“MOM!” she shrieked, sprinting across the shattered glass in her bare feet, throwing her small arms around my waist, burying her face into the rough wool of my grandfather’s jacket:
“MOM!
YOU CAME!
DAD LIED TO ME!
THEY WERE TRYING TO MAKE ME SIGN!”
I did not flinch.
My left arm came around my daughter’s shoulders, pulling her against my ribs in a protective, unyielding iron embrace, while my right hand rested calmly on Barnaby’s harness.
I looked down into Ellie’s terrified, tear-streaked face:
“The door is open, baby,” Colonel Iris Mercer whispered softly.
My voice had no volume.
It held forty decibels of compressed polar diamond:
“Mom has the watch.”
Mark Conway scrambled backward across the wet marble on his hands and knees, his ivory dinner jacket soaked in spilled scotch and glass dust, his manicured hands bleeding from multiple lacerations:
“Iris…?”
Mark wheezed, his voice climbing into that raw, pathetic register of a man staring into the mouth of a fifteen-inch naval cannon:
“You… you’re an Army Colonel…?!
How did you find us?!
We’re in the Bahamas!
The United States military has no jurisdiction on this island!”
“This island sits directly atop the oceanic continuity spur of Conduit Ten, Mark,” a new voice boomed from the breach.
Walking through the shattered glass…
Wearing his full service dress blue uniform, his four solid-silver stars catching the halogen lights…
Came **Vice Admiral David Mercer**, Chief of Naval Operations.
Beside him walked **Major General Michael Grant**, Deputy Director of Special Operations Command, and **United States Attorney Marcus Cooper**, Chief Federal Prosecutor and Special Admiralty Master, holding an unsealed, four-hundred-page leather litigation brief bound with dark-crimson silk ribbon.
Admiral David Mercer stopped three paces from where Mark lay groveling on the floor.
The four-star Admiral snapped his polished heels together with an audible *CRACK* against the marble floorboards and brought his right hand up to an unyielding, razor-sharp military salute directly toward the woman holding the child:
