The music kept going for a few seconds. Then the organist noticed. The music faltered. Then it stopped completely.
The whole church went silent.
Two hundred people were standing there, frozen, staring at the bride.Bride accessories
Hannah was looking at the front row.
At the first chair on the left. At the gold card that said MOTHER OF THE BRIDE. At the woman in the champagne dress sitting behind it.
I saw Hannah’s shoulders go stiff.
Then I saw her turn her head slowly, looking down the rows of people. Searching. Looking for something. Looking for someone.
She looked at the second row. The third. The fourth.
She turned back to her father.
She leaned close to him and whispered something. I couldn’t hear what it was. Nobody could.
Mark looked at her for a long moment.
Then he looked back over his shoulder. All the way down the aisle. All the way to the last row.
