My Husband Made Me Sleep in the Car at 34 Weeks Pregnant—Then His Mother Knocked on My Window at 2 A.M.

Ryan’s eyes darted toward me.

“You told her?”

“I found her,” Linda said. “Curled up in a car at two in the morning like she had nowhere else to go.”

“It wasn’t like that.”

“What was it like?”

“I need sleep for work.”

Linda stared at him.

“So does every husband with a pregnant wife. They buy earplugs. They sleep on the couch. They get up and help. They do not throw the mother of their child into a parking lot.”

Ryan crossed his arms.

“You don’t understand.”

“I understand perfectly.”

Linda picked up the cot and pushed it toward him.

“Since you believe sleeping outside is reasonable, you can take this downstairs.”

Ryan laughed nervously.

“Very funny.”

“I’m not joking.”

“This is my apartment.”

“The lease is in both your names,” Linda replied. “The rent comes from your joint account, and Claire paid the security deposit from her savings. Stop speaking as though she is a guest you have allowed to stay here.”
